The concept
Allow teenagers to gain a clear understanding of the actor’s profession and encourage personal theatrical expression, in collaboration with a theater professional and within the enchanting setting of the Jean Cocteau amphitheater at the Mediterranean Center.
Participants will aim to:
- Enhance their expressiveness;
- Maintain their freedom and imagination to build their character;
- Explore various stage proposals;
- Actively engage in a collective creation with a theatrical troupe spirit.
The place
The internship takes place at the Mediterranean Center for French Studies in Cap d’Ail, an international linguistic and cultural center founded by Jean Moreau in 1952, located at the gates of the Principality of Monaco. The Center is set in a splendid three-hectare park filled with flowers and wooded areas, overlooking the Mediterranean on the mountainside. Its open-air theater was decorated in an antique style by the poet Jean Cocteau between 1957 and 1963 and was designed to offer the youth of the world a space for expression and reflection.
Throughout the summer, the Center welcomes international teenagers who come together through artistic, linguistic, and sports activities, learning to enrich one another through their differences.
The pedagogical approach
The workshop will begin with the implementation of specific exercises to assess the trainees’ skills and build their confidence to better prepare them for theatrical performance.
It will conclude with a performance at the Jean Cocteau Theater in collaboration with the International Orchestra Academy and in the presence of spectators of all ages.
Basic tools:
- mastering one’s body to better manage space;
- becoming aware of breathing to project one’s voice;
- utilizing resonators, using the body as a string instrument, and taking care of one’s voice;
- learning to read a text aloud, analyze it, and perform it on stage;
- improvising to develop imagination and assert the desire to speak within a group.
The program
- Day 1: collective work on a classic text (shared beforehand with participants), reading, analysis, and scenic approach to the play;
- Day 2: learning theatrical acting and rehearsing for the end-of-workshop performance;
- Day 3: improvisations and “Impro-Flash,” verbal duels, and eloquence games; (afternoon free: Mediterranean Center activities and text learning…)
- Day 4: learning theatrical acting and rehearsing for the end-of-workshop performance;
- Day 5: learning theatrical acting, rehearsing for the end-of-workshop performance, and public presentation at the Jean Cocteau Theater.
Note: During the workshop, we will focus on mastering oral skills and public speaking, with the aim of preparing student trainees for the grand oral exam implemented by the Ministry of Education.
